Honing is a machining process. A self-centring honing tool such as our Novoflex-B® honing tools is used for this. Cylindrical or flat inner surfaces can thus be optimised in dimensional and shape accuracy.
Novoflex-B® honing tools consist of polyamide carrier bristles on a twisted shaft. The tips of the bristles are each fitted with abrasive balls. The balls work their way down to a flat surface in the course of machining. The most freqently used abrasive grit is silicon carbide or zirconium corundum. Many different diameters and grit sizes are available.
Work is done with constant pressure and a low cutting speed. The grinding balls press against the inner surface of the bore. Roughness peaks are thus successively levelled. The tool is used in an oscillating manner. The result is a cross-grinding between 25 and 40°.
For cylinder liners in particular, a so-called plateau finish is sought. The individual profile sections (plateaus) have a low contact roughness and are therefore particularly slippery. Deeper "grooves" between the plateaus ensure good lubricating oil adhesion.
